GG: Top-ranked Carmel captures six-team Brebeuf Tee Off Tourney

WESTFIELD – The 2009-10 high school sports year is under way!

Six Central Indiana golf squads descended on the 4,890-yard, par-71 Woodwind Golf Club (rating 69.5, slope 115) Aug. 3 for the annual Brebeuf Invitational. They officially opened the school sports calendar by teeing off at 8:20 ET Monday morning.

The top-ranked Carmel Greyhounds ruled the day. The powerful contingent put two golfers in the 70s and posted three of the five lowest individual scores en route to a 322 for the day.

The performance actually amounted to a case of overkill as No. 11 Noblesville claimed second in the field with a 360, some 38 strokes off the pace. Fishers, which earned honorable mention honors in the preseason poll, grabbed third on the day with a 370, while Guerin Catholic was fourth with 395.

Northview, meanwhile, claimed fifth in front of the host Braves, with North Central (Indianapolis) not fielding a full team.

The Greyhounds’ dominance included a 74 from veteran Ari Savich, whose eagle on No. 9 helped her take low medalist honors. Teammate Briana Midkiff shot a 78, while Megan Potee of Noblesville carded an 80 and the Greyhounds’ Taylor Imus logged an 84.

“It was a great start for the ‘Hounds,” said 10th-year Carmel coach Ken Kelly, whose team next will face defending state champion No. 6 Hamilton Southeastern at the Royals’ own invitational Tuesday at Stony Creek. “We struggled with some approach shots and putting today, but we improved 22 shots from the last year (in a two-stroke victory over Noblesville) to defend our title.”

If there was a surprise on the day, it was the performance of the upstart Guerin Catholic team. The Golden Eagles played fewer than 10 meets a season ago and made a strong effort to step up the schedule this year.

That includes several showdowns with the perennially powerful Hamilton County units, and Guerin fared well on Monday.

Senior Erin Meister fired a 41-41–82 to place fourth in the individual standings. Hoosier Authority caught up with the senior after her round and found this Golden Eagle unfazed by the stiff competition.

The Monday meet begins two weeks of major invitational tournaments all over Indiana. Those include stellar fields at the Roncalli Invitational and the Trojan Invite hosted by Center Grove. The latter event scheduled for Aug. 10 will feature 14 of the Top 15 squads in the state.
