GG: Roncalli wins, Carmel advances through regional

FRANKLIN CENTRAL REGIONAL
Top-ranked
Roncalli tied No. 5 Carmel for the crown after each shot a 323 at
Smock, but it was the Rebels who were awarded the title on a
fifth-score tiebreaker (85 to 87 in favor of Roncalli). Meanwhile,
unranked Shelbyville was another 29 shots back in shocking No. 17
Zionsville by two strokes for third and the final state finals berth.
Carmel’s
Ari Savich and Carlie Gehlhausen of Geurin Catholic both shot a 75, but
Savich took medalist honors via the tiebreaker.
“We
were ranked behind Roncalli, so it turned out the way most thought it
would,” said 10th-year Carmel coach Ken Kelly. “(Roncalli coach) Bryan
Hendricks and I knew the play wasn’t going well during the round for
both of us – we talked a few times during the round to compare.
“Once
we started playing the back side, things turned around for a few of my
players and I felt we maybe had a chance to come back.”

Carmel
was five shots down after three players had finished, but No. 4 Diana
Poulin outplayed her Roncalli counterpart, Coleen Gaughan, by four
shots to cut the defeicit to a single stroke. Carmel No. 5 Hilary
Givens was on No. 16 at 2-over on the back nine after being +10 on the
front, Kelly said, and if she finished strong the Greyhounds could use
her score instead of No. 3 Kate McDougal’s 87.
But
Givens double-bogeyed No. 17 and parred 18 to finish at 86 and put the
match in a tie, and the 85 of Roncalli No. 5 Catherine Gaughan was two
strokes better than McDougal.
“We made it
interesting at the end but came up short … again,” Kelly said. “We left
a lot of shots out there. The one that sticks in my head is the
two-foot putt Ari missed on 18 that lipped out, but they all had
several miss-hits.
“We tied the No. 1-ranked
team and didn’t play our best – that’s a good feeling. I hope the
players have that burning revenge feeling deep down and give a good
practice this week, then go to The Legends Friday ready to play their
game.”
It was the sixth time this year that
two of the state’s elite programs had battled. Roncalli had the better
score twice (Martinsville Invite, Hall of Fame Tournament) and Carmel
once (three-way match at Maple Creek), with – quite naturally, of
course – two of the events ended up in a draw (rain-shortened Hamilton
Southeastern Invite, Center Grove Invite) just like Saturday at Smock.
Wonder if these two will be keeping en eye on the other’s scores at The Legends?
